Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) in Breast Carcinoma

Priyanka Verma

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most alarming problem of the current time. Nitric oxide, a free radical gas is synthesized by isoenzymes called nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide synthase consists of three isoforms; Nitric oxide produced is cytotoxic which is known to inhibit the DNA synthesis causing its damage. Keeping this in mind, nitric oxide synthase was determined in breast cancer and normal breast tissue. For this tissue from 60 breast cancer and 30 normal healthy controls (FNAC confirmed) were taken. Determination of NOS was done by commercial kit available (Bioxytech Nitric oxide synthase assay kit Catalog no. 2213). In this study, there was a significant increase in nitric oxide synthase in breast cancer when compared to normal healthy controls. This show presence of oxidative stress in breast carcinoma compared to healthy controls. Steps should be taken to introduce some changes in nitric oxide synthase genome, so that the production of nitric oxide doesn’t take place, thereby reducing oxidative stress to some extent.
