This study was undertaken to determine the presence of pesticide residues in some agricultural soils of Gazipur district in Bangladesh. The collected soil samples were analyzed for some selected pesticides such as DDT, methoxychlor, acephate, fenthion, fenitrothion, parathion, ethion, carbaryl, carbofuran and cypermethrin by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with PDA detector. The results showed that none of the soil samples were contaminated with organochlorine and pyrithrium pesticides. Soil sample (SS-1) was contaminated with fenitrothion and carbofuran at 1.36 and 3.09 mg kg-1 dry weight respectively. On the other hand, SS-2, SS-3, SS-5 and SS-6 were found contaminated with carbaryl at 0.25 mg kg-1, acephate at 0.25 mg kg-1, fenitrothion at 0.47 mg kg-1 and carbofuran at 3.34 mg kg-1, respectively. In this study, no methoxychlor, DDT, fenthion, parathion, ethion and Cypermethrin were detected in any soil sample. Indiscriminate use of these pesticides may cause hazards to human health and the environment. The study also suggested that regular monitoring programs for pesticide residues in soil are needed to protect environmental degradation.
