Biochemical Analysis of Cadaveric Synovial Fluid for Determination of Death Interval

Abstract

Estimation of post-mortem interval or time since a death has always remained an important requirement in medico-legal autopsies. Since the 1850s, scientists have been working on different methods to determine post-mortem interval but none of the methods is either or collectively reliable in measuring exact death interval because of environmental factors. Hence in this study, synovial fluid sodium concentration was investigated to predict post-mortem interval. Total 100 samples of the synovial fluid from 50 dead persons who died in SRG hospital, Jhalawar with a known time of death, were collected for measurement of sodium concentration to find out the simple and accurate method of estimation of post-mortem interval. In our study, the synovial sodium ion concentration decreases with increasing post-mortem interval.
