Abstract

The present study was a cross-sectional study carried out in the year 2016. The aim of the study was to find out the prevalence of obesity and its causes among school children aged between 8 and 15 years. Ethical clearance was obtained from the institutional ethical committee. The written consents were taken from the heads of the schools to conduct survey in their schools. The height and weight of the students were measured by height scale and weighing machine, respectively. Their body mass index (BMI) was calculated by using the formula “weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters” (kg/m2). BMI chart of the World Health Organization (WHO) for boys and girls was used to determine the obesity. Students were interviewed as per the Preformed Questionnaire Performa. Preformed Questionnaire Performa contained demographic details and questions related with associated factors of obesity. The qualitative data were analyzed by Chi square test. The present study revealed that the prevalence of obesity among children aged 8–15 years in Pune city was 18.40%.
