Abstract

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is one of the common clinical conditions met in day-to-day gynaecological practice, especially among the parous women. Uterine prolapse is a condition in which the uterus descends down the vaginal canal towards the vaginal introitus. It is a major health concern affecting millions of women worldwide. It is a silent disorder with a huge impact on women’s quality of life and is a frequent indication for gynaecological surgery. The global prevalence of uterine prolapse is estimated between 2 and 20%, whereas its prevalence is found to be 15–20% in Indian women below 45 years of age, who have been pregnant at least once during her life. In India, the prevalence rate is 15–20% for the same age. In the classical Unani literature, uterine prolapse is termed as “Nutu-e-Rahm”. Uterus is supported and prevented from sagging down by a number of muscular and fibromuscular structures. Any laxity or weakness in these supports causes downward movement of the uterus. Management of uterine prolapse are preventive, conservative, and surgery. In the Unani system of medicine, various forms of drug are used for uterine prolapse treatment, such as oral drug, suppository, Sitz bath, external wash, ointment, cupping and various drug regimens.
