Abstract

Kalarchi is one of the Siddha drug traditionally being in use since ancient times to treat Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The botanical name of Kalarchi is Caesalpinia bonduc (L.) Roxb is belonging to the family Caesalpiniaceae. It is a climber up to 15 m long, throughout India, near sea-coast, especially all over Bengal, Bombay and whole of Southern India. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is the highly prevalence disease among larger populations of women especially in India. Our changing lifestyle pattern is the major reason for the cause of this condition in women. Irregularities in menstrual cycle, unwanted excess hair growth, obesity are majorly seen nowadays in women’s with PCOS. Though so many therapies, treatment modalities are available in allopathic medical system, the significance of Siddha medicine is a fantastic thing in the management of PCOS in women. This review analyses the available existing literature evidences regarding the medicinal importance of Siddha drug Kalarchi. Hope this article might be highly useful for further preclinical and clinical research works which is aiming the remedy for PCOS using Siddha drug Kalarchi.
