Very little research has been commit oneself to and begins to date on relative demand and utilization, or on the extent to which conventional medicines are used as a complement, alternative or supplement to modern medical services. Traditional medicines create an efficient atmosphere in situations associated with chronic conditions. Juniperus communis known as abhal in Unani medicine is one among the thousands of Indian medicinal drugs which is an evergreen tree that grows wild throughout parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. This particular tree grows up to 10 ft tall and has needle-like leaves and seed cones. Unani renowned physicians have described this drug as a potent emmenagogue, so prescribed it for different purposes in females like to treat oligomenorrhoea and amenorrhoea, as an abortifacient and contraceptive drug. Besides, this has also been used to treat other conditions like paralysis, inflammations, infected ulcers, etc. The experimental studies have shown several pharmacological properties. The aim of this review is to explore knowledge about its importance in female diseases and also to update on different aspects of this drug so that further studies can be conducted keeping in view the Unani literature.
