PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF DIABETES MELLITUS (DM) WITH DIETOTHERAPY: A REVIEW

Ansari Naeela, Rehnuma Sayyed, Farha Rizwan

Abstract

Prevalence of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been increasing throughout the world day by day, to an extent that the condition has reached the epidemic proportions in many countries. One of the main reasons for increasing diabetic cases is the sedentary lifestyle, intake of junk food and obesity. Unhealthy eating with profound dependence on junk food, is the major reason for increasing lifestyle diseases like Diabetes Mellitus. Greco-Arab and ancient physicians treated diabetic patients with diet modulation first; if this failed, medicines were used. Special dietary pattern and foods recommended by Unani system of medicine are scientifically validated and capable to inhibit the excessive glucose secretion in blood. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the available literature exploring the various diet recommendation and role of dietotherapy in DM prevention and treatment
