The word diabetes is derived from Greek word “Diabanein” which means passing through. Ziyabetus can be divided into two types according to presence or absence of sugar in urine viz. Ziyabetus sada or barid and Ziyabetus shakri or haar. The various classical text books of Unani medicine also contain detailed descriptions of this disease. The causes of disease are suemizajwazauf e kulliya, masanawajigar (disordered temperament and weakness of kidney, bladder and liver). Most of the Unani scholars believe that diabetes is caused due to sue mizajbalghami (abnormal phlegmatic temperament). In the present paper, concept of diabetes mellitus (Ziyabetus shakri) in the Unani system of medicine will be discussed in detail.
