Uncontrolled Nausea and Vomiting Managed by Unani Drugs: A Case Report

Abstract


Nausea and vomiting are usually the result of self-limited gastrointestinal infections, but in some cases recurrent vomiting without any known discernible organic reasons is seen which have serious impact on health. The cause of vomiting differ in ages may be due to pregnancy, motion sickness, medication, gallbladder causes, gastrointestinal causes, certain types of infections etc. According to the Unani System of Medicine, Qai (vomiting) is caused by  accumulation of humours in the stomach, Fasaad-e-ghiza, Sue mizaj Meda, intestinal worms, intoxication, Zofe Meda. In the present case study, an 18-year-old female patient was admitted with complaints of nausea, vomiting (10–12 episodes/day) and burning epigastrium for past one month. The patient had priorly taken allopathic medicines, injectables PPI and antiemetic medicine but was not relieved. On examination, there were no significant clinical findings. All routine investigations were also within normal limit. She was diagnosed as a case of uncontrolled vomiting due to excess Khilt-e-Safra and was treated accordingly for the same. There was significant improvement found in the symptoms after Unani medicine and the patient was completely cured in four weeks. No adverse effects were reported during treatment; therefore, the formulation was found to be safe and effective. Such good and safe result of these drugs made the present case to be reported.
