Investigating the Therapeutic Potential of Badranjboya in Unani Systemic Medicine

Abstract


Badranjboya, a potent medicinal plant derived from Nepeta hindostana, stands as a flowering plant or perennial herb belonging to the illustrious Lamiaceae family, known to thrive in the bountiful lands of India and Pakistan. Its profound importance within Unani literature is evident, for it has been hailed as “Mufarreh_al_Quloob,” denoting its esteemed status as a heart tonic. This venerable recognition can be traced back to the enlightening works of the eminent Ibn Sina (980–1037 AD), who espoused its virtues in his celebrated masterpiece, “Risala Advia Qalbiya.” The expanse of Unani literature unveils a treasure trove of descriptions, attributing Badranjboya with multifaceted qualities, portraying it as a tonic for vital organs, a stimulant, a sedative, a hypocholesteremic agent, an anti-inflammatory remedy, and a deobstruent. Notably, it exhibits exceptional efficacy in mitigating cerebral obstructions caused by equanimity or heightened levels of black bile (sawda). The sedative attributes of Badranjboya extend its therapeutic reach to encompass diverse conditions such as asthma, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Considering the intricate interplay between personality, emotions, and cardiac ailments, Badranjboya emerges as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards restoring psychological equilibrium. This comprehensive study endeavors to delve into the vast expanse of Badranjboya's medicinal properties, meticulously examining the profound insights derived from Unani literature and corroborating them with relevant medicinal research. By amalgamating ancient wisdom with contemporary scientific findings, the present paper unveiled the true essence of Badranjboya as a formidable herbal remedy, effectively addressing the intricate tapestry of heart and mental disorders that afflict humankind.
