Cardiac arrest refers to a serious condition in which the heart is unable to pump the blood effectively, which leads to improper functioning of other vital organs. Basic life support which is a non-invasive life saving technique used to maintain blood supply to vital organs in emergency which can be provided by trained lay persons or bystanders without the help of any equipments and drugs till the medical services arrive. The aim of the study was to assess effectiveness of educational intervention program on basic life support among caregivers of patients admitted in male and female surgical wards of Nehru Hospital, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). Theory and steps of BLS were explained to them along with skill demonstration. The effectiveness of educational intervention was assessed using a questionnaire and checklist during skill demonstration. Results were based on the scoring system that was classified as good, average and poor. From a sample of 100 caregivers, 85% of caregivers showed good performance, while performing techniques of providing CPR, 75% of caregivers performed good. The study shows that caregivers of each age-group, irrespective of locality, sex, and educational status were interested in learning life saving techniques and they learned well. So, such training programs must be conducted for laypersons along with other professionals like policemen, teachers, sportspersons etc., so that they could save the life of a person during GOLDEN HOUR (after cardiac arrest till medical help arrives). Timely aid provided can prevent unnatural deaths due to sudden cardiac arrest.
