Urinary catheterization is a routine medical procedure that facilitates direct drainage of the urinary bladder. Around one-fourth of the hospitalized patients are catheterized during their hospital stay. The study was carried out to assess the practices of nursing personnel regarding insertion, care and removal of indwelling catheter in a tertiary care hospital. 22 nurses were enrolled and comparison was made between their self expressed and their observed practices regarding catheterization. A lot of gap was observed in the majority of steps at the time of insertion, care and removal of catheter. During insertion, gap varied from the 5 to 82%; while providing care it varied from 9 to 82%; and at the time of removal, it varied from 5 to 90%. Based on the findings of this study, a lot of discrepancy was observed regarding urinary catheterization. As per the standardized procedure, the nursing personnel need to be sensitized periodically regarding the procedure.
