Knowledge of Mothers about the Risk of Domestic Accident among Toddlers: Effectiveness of Strategy for Teaching about Home Safety

Introduction: Accident is the single-most health problem and biggest cause of death after the age of one year. Injuries are most common among 1–3 year of age group which leads to death of children. The leading causes of injury are burn, chocking, ingestion, falls etc. Supervision and awareness are necessary for the child to prevent home accident. Aims: To assess the knowledge and to find out the effectiveness of teaching strategy regarding household accident among toddlers. Setting and Design: A quasi-experimental study was conducted by selected villages of rural areas of Ambala, Haryana, India. Over-all 60 mothers of toddler, wherein 30 mothers were kept under control group and 30 were in the experimental group. Material and Methods: Structured knowledge questionnaire with the help of convenient sampling technique, were administered to all the mothers. Result: After providing the teaching strategy, the result had revealed significant difference between pretest and posttest knowledge score of the mothers. Among the mothers of control group, 77% mothers were having average knowledge, 13.33% were having poor knowledge and 10% mothers were having good level of knowledge; although in experimental group, 100% mothers were having good level of knowledge while no mother fall in the category of average and poor level of knowledge score. Conclusion: By organizing and providing the educational aid session we can improve the awareness and motivation to prevent household accident among children.
