Prevalence and Risk Factors in a Sample Population of Hemiplegia—An Observational Study

Abstract

Falij is the paralysis of longitudinal half of the body starting either below the neck, sparing head and face or covering the entire longitudinal half of the body from head to toe. It draws analogy with hemiplegia occurring due to stroke. Unani system of medicine asserts to possess treatment for motor recovery in Falije Nisfi. Almost all ancient Unani physicians have advocated Tanqia and Ta’deel as treatment of Falij caused by BalghamiKhilt. Patients of hemplasia who attended the OPD/IPD, Department of Moalijat, Jamia Tibbya Deoband, Saharanpur, India were thoroughly enquired and examined. The highest incidence of 61 (61%) patients was observed in lower middle class followed by 24 (24%) patients in upper lower class. As shown by age distribution of the patient, 49% patients were in the age group of 61–70 years. Male predominance was seen in 89% cases. Out of 100 patients, 81 (81%) patients followed mixed dietary habit and 19 (19%) patients did vegetarian. The most prevalent among the risk factors in this study was smoking in 51 (51%) cases, followed by hypertension present in 47 (47%) patients. A maximum of 91 (91%) patients were found having Balghami mizaj followed by nine (9%) patients having Damvi. Unani physicians have treated Falij-e-Nisfi effectively since ancient times on the principles of Tanqia and Ta’deel; however, various drugs combinations and regimenal procedures as a comprehensive treatment have not been scientifically validated through clinical trials.
