Salivary gland tumors: a retrospective review of 75 cases

Abstract

The objective of this study was to review our recent experience with salivary gland tumors (SGTs). A total number of 75 charts of patients treated for SGTs at the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, Pyongyang Medical College Hospital from January 2011 to December 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. In our series, the average age of patients with SGT was 40.5±12.2 and there was no sexual predilection. The parotid gland was the most frequently affected salivary gland (60.0%). The SGTs were commonly 20~40 mm in size. Mass, most of which were painless, was the most frequently found symptoms among patients (100.0%). Benign tumors comprised the most of cases (84.0%) and pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor, comprising 73.3% of all cases in our series. Warthin tumor was the second most common benign tumor and constituted approximately 5.3%. Malignancies were found in only 16.0%. During 5 years after operation, 4 of 45 cases of parotid tumors were recurred (8.9%), 3 of which were benign and 1 was malignant. And 1 of 26 cases of submandibular gland tumors was recurred (3.8%), which was malignant.
