High blood pressure is a disorder of circulatory system characterized by the sustained, non-physiologic rise of systemic blood pressure. It is considered as the leading cause of death in the world. In India and its encompassing nations, the awareness level for hypertension is <45%. Only 50% of these are on treatment and adequacy of control of blood pressure is exceptionally poor. Standard medical practices being employed currently for treating high blood pressure are medication and diet. Various other options like complementary and alternative therapies are also available for treating high blood pressure, but due to their little solid evidence, physicians hesitate to integrate such therapies in their general practices. The main aim of this review is to provide the most authoritative and evidence-based information about the role of various complementary and alternative therapies in lowering the high blood pressure, which may help in integrating these practices in health clinics and hospitals to combat this health challenge.
