Seroprevalence of Dengue Viral Infection in Patients Attending To a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kota, South–East Rajasthan, India

Background: Dengue virus (DENV) is the most important cause of mosquito-borne viral disease in humans world-wide. Dengue fever is caused by four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV)-DENV1, DENV2, DENV3 and DENV4 .Infections is transmitted mainly by Aedes aegypti. In India, a dengue virus infection has been frequently encountered in epidemic proportions in several states. Objectives: This study was conducted to report the seroprevalence of Dengue virus infection in South-East Rajasthan. The ultimate goal of this study was to identify Dengue infection in early phase of disease and prevent future complications. Methodology: The present study was conducted in the central laboratory of Govt. Medical College, Kota from period of 1st January 2018 to 31th December 2018 to evaluate the seroprevalence of Dengue virus infection in South-East Rajasthan. Sera were tested by SD dengue IgM antibody capture ELISA for IgM antibody detection as per kit insert. Results: Out of total 16945 serum samples tested, 1064(6.28%) were found positive for dengue virus infection. Of all the patients tested, 12031(71%) were males and 4914(29%) were females. 659(61.94%) positive samples were of male patients and 405(38.06%) positive samples were of female patients. Dengue affected males and females in a ratio of about 1.6:1. Out of the total positive for dengue, Age group mostly affected were 21-30 years, 31-40 years and 11-20 year 38.53%, 27.54% and 18.70% respectively. Seasonal trend showed a gradual increase in dengue positives started from August with a peak in October (30.73%) and November (21.43 %).Conclusion: Dengue is an important emerging disease of the tropical and subtropical regions today. Epidemics of dengue are increasing in frequency. Dengue virus activity is high during monsoon and post monsoon period which coincides with increased vector breeding. This study calls attention to the Dengue infection detected in early phase of disease and prevents morbidity, mortality and future complications.
