To Develop Self-instructional Module on ‘Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Collection, Preservation and Utilization’ and Evaluate its Effectiveness on Improving the Knowledge of Operational Level Nurses

Abstract

Umbilical cord stem cell based regenerative and cellular medicine has now become a fascination for all. The umbilical cord blood, donated by mothers after the birth of newborn, has become an accepted source of hematopoietic stem cells for bone marrow reconstitution. They play an important role in the treatment of blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders. This study is aimed to assess the knowledge of operational level nurses regarding umbilical cord stem cells collection, preservation, and utilization at S.G.R.D. Hospital Vallah and GMC Hospital in Amritsar. A pre-experimental one group pre-test and posttest design was used to assess the effectiveness of Self-Instructional Module on umbilical cord stem cell collection, preservation, and utilization among 400 operational level nurses that was selected by using purposive non-random sampling technique. The results of the study revealed that mean difference of pretest and posttest was (28.10%). It was found that statistically highly significant difference between pre- and post-knowledge scores among the operational level nurses (‘t’=33, P<0.001). Overall knowledge score in pretest was 49.77% and posttest was 77.87%. There was statistically significant association between posttest knowledge score with age (57.7*, df= 6p<.001) and experience (27.13*df=6 p<.00) of operational level nurses with selected socio-demographic variables. Rest of the variables like gender, habitat, professional qualification, unit wise experience, mass media exposure had no significant association with pre-test and posttest level.
