A Study of The Unknown Cases Brought for Autopsy at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital

Abstract


Somatic death is the state of body that shows complete loss of sensibility and the ability to move. There is complete cessation of functions of the brain, the heart and the lungs, so called “Tripod of Life” which maintains life and health. Unknown cases refer to those cases where the identity of the patients could not be made. This may be due to the fact that most of these cases were admitted by the police from road side or by other persons in a state of unconsciousness. Opinion regarding the cause of dead in unknown dead bodies is a test of ability of the forensic expert. The different facts like cause of death, time since death, treatment received or not etc are explained here in this study. This study was conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Assam, India during the period of January 2017 to December 2017.
