Abstract

Pendimethalin, a weedicide is a potential toxic pollutant, adversely affecting the fauna of aquatic ecosystem. The Channa punctatus were exposed to pendimethalin to determine LC50 values for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and to study the behavioral changes. The aim of present study was to assess the 96 hours acute toxicity level of pendimethalin. The LC50 was determined by Finnyl’s Probit analysis. According to graphical plots, the 50% mortality values of pendimethalin for 96 h were 1.16 ml/l. These fishes were subjected to sub-lethal concentrations (1/2nd is 0.58 ml/l) of pendimethalin as per suggestions for different exposure periods (24, 48, 72, 96 hours). So, once the exposure of pendimethalin, the carbohydrate, lipid content in muscle, liver, gill, and the excretory organ was found to be deteriorated rapidly. Therefore, the hasty decrease in the content will interrupt the overall metabolism of the associate organism which may prove fatal.
