Varicose Veins and its Management in Unani and Modern System of Medicine

Abstract

The varicose vein is defined as “dilated tortuous and elongated superficial veins of the lower limb”. Dawali (varicose veins) is one of the commonest categories of primary venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are classified into primary and secondary types. Primary varicose veins occur more frequently, and are caused by incompetent or absent valves, defective connective tissue and smooth muscle weakness in venous wall and are usually hereditary in nature. As per Unani physicians, Khilt-e-Sauda (black bile) and Balgham (phlegm) are responsible for the genesis of this disease. Risk factors for varicose veins include family history, age, and pregnancy; a possible risk factor is standing for long period of time. It affects approximately 23% of US adults. Venous eczema, venous pigmentation, lipodermatosclerosis and venous ulceration are complications associated with varicose veins which are painful and distressing condition for the patient and increase the financial burden. This study is aimed to review the Unani and current management modalities for varicose veins. There are various treatment modalities for varicose veins which have different outcomes. Various articles on management of varicose veins were reviewed and there outcomes were compared. Unani system of medicine provides alternative treatment for varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation were associated with faster recovery and less pain in the management of varicose veins as compared to conventional ligation and stripping method.
