Comparative Study of Reaction Time in the Individuals of Bilious and Phlegmatic Temperament

Background and Objective: Temperament (mizaj) is a wide term in itself which encompasses all distinctive traits of an individual. Accordingly, every individual having a distinctive temperament should also possess distinctive characters as well. The objective of this study is to compare the reaction time of bilious (safrawi) and phlegmatic (balghami) temperament individuals. Methodology: This study was carried out in the Advance Instrumentation Lab, Department of Kulliyat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh during the year 2015–2016. For this study, two hundred (200) healthy volunteers of both sex having bilious and phlegmatic temperaments were randomly selected from Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, and from some other faculties of Aligarh Muslim University. The temperament of the volunteers was assessed using a performa prepared on the basis of Ajnas-e-Ashra, mentioned in the classical Unani literature. After the assessment and categorization of temperament, the volunteers were called for an assessment of simple reaction time. Results: It was revealed after this study that the mean reaction time of bilious subjects was 202.85 with the standard deviation of 15.15 while the mean reaction time of phlegmatic volunteers was 230.79 with the standard deviation of 24.96. The unpaired t-test was applied to test the significance of the results and it was found that the difference of reaction time of bilious (Safrawi) and phlegmatic (Balghami) subjects was highly significant (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Through this study, we can say that the functions of the brain in bilious individuals are faster than phlegmatic ones because of the prevailing heat and dryness in their temperaments.
