Abstract

Rakta is said to be one of the ten ‘Prānāyatanas’ i.e. site of Prāna (resorts of life). It is as a special tissue, has been given importance among other dhātus mainly due to its function ‘Jivana’ and also considering its importance in pathological process in the body. It is the only dhātu having āgneya in nature. Ācārya Suśruta has termed it as ‘Jiva’ and is the mula or foundation of the body. He has also said that the increase or decrease of dhātus depends on the Rakta Dhātu. So it has to be protected at any costs. The bala, varna and sukhāyu of the body also depend upon it. Therefore Rakta (blood) is considered almost the picture of the body and the normal condition of the body can be inferred from the physiological limits assigned to the haematological parameters.
